Alex Bellini to Finish Remarkable 3,200-Mile LA-NY Footrace
70-Day Run Across America Athlete Pushed to Extremes While Adding Name to History Books
NEW YORK, Aug. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Alex Bellini knew before he even started the insurmountable challenge of running across America for 70 days straight and averaging 46 miles a day that he would be successful. For a man who has long mastered the art of mind-body balance, the task was one he knew he could conquer.
The 32-year-old extreme athlete from Aprica, Italy will cross the finish line in Central Park in New York City on Saturday, August 27th between 3:00-6:00 p.m. ET and succeed in finishing the LA-NY Footrace.
"After rowing across the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, I have now connected them by foot," said Alex Bellini, an extreme athlete who rowed solo across both oceans. "There were days I felt I could not take another step and days of experiencing a kind of euphoria one rarely knows in life. Every border I crossed and mileage marker achieved made me feel closer to my destination. I had a great support team who were remarkable in helping me face the many daily challenges. The sites across America were breathtaking but the pain was sometimes intolerable. I knew however, that I would never give up. Never."
Facing unforeseen challenges, including 100+ degrees temperatures for nearly 20 of the 70 days, extreme elevation changes daily, fog, rain, flying debris from passing motorists, snakes and bears, Alex also became the proud father of his second daughter, born back home in Italy just five days before race end.
"I am now excited to get home back to Italy and meet my new baby daughter and see my wife and other daughter. I will take with me a true sense of accomplishment. I look forward to going back to speaking. Now, I have another story to tell," Bellini said with a big smile.
Traversing 12 states and over 3,200 miles/5,000 kilometers during the 10-week journey, Alex is one of just eight runners who competed in only the ninth-ever transcontinental footrace across the United States. The 2011 LA-NY Footrace is a re-creation of the 1928 trail of Andy Payne, winner of the first race between Los Angeles and New York City.
At age 20, Payne won the first Trans America footrace from LA to NY. This year's race was organized by ultramarathon runner Serge Girard to revive the legend. Ever since the pioneers set foot on American soil, crossing the continent has been a dream for many. Only 244 athletes have ever crossed the entire United States.
