Alexander Dubose Jefferson & Townsend Announces New Partner Richard O. Faulk
HOUSTON, March 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Alexander Dubose Jefferson & Townsend LLP (ADJT), an internationally recognized appellate boutique law firm with offices in Houston, Austin and Dallas, today announced the addition of Richard O. Faulk as a partner of the firm. Faulk will divide his time between Texas and Washington, D.C., enhancing the national reach of ADJT's appellate practice in class actions, multi-district litigation (MDL), and individual lawsuits.
One of the first lawyers board certified in civil appellate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 1987, Faulk's focus on complex toxic tort and environmental litigation—including class actions and mass tort cases—has led him to argue cases before the United States Supreme Court and a number of federal and state appellate courts throughout the country.
"I'm pleased to bridge my practice between Washington, D.C. and Texas, where I practiced for more than 35 years," Faulk said. "Joining ADJT is an exceptional opportunity to work with extraordinarily experienced, effective, and distinguished appellate lawyers. Beyond that motivation, the opportunity to practice with partner Wallace B. Jefferson—until recently Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court—was simply irresistible."
Immediately prior to joining ADJT, Faulk was a partner in Hollingsworth LLP in Washington, D.C. Before relocating his practice to D.C., Faulk chaired the firm-wide litigation and environmental practices of Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP for many years.
In Washington, D.C., Faulk also served as the Senior Director of Energy and Environment for the Law & Economics Center of George Mason University School of Law, where he participated in judicial, state attorney general, and congressional staff education conferences. He remains a member of the Board of Overseers for the Searle Civil Justice Institute.
"Richard (Faulk) is an outstanding attorney and leader in the legal community," Douglas Alexander, a founding partner at ADJT, said. "We are confident he will be a great asset to our team."
Faulk's extensive work in federal and state appellate courts includes cases regarding:
- Challenges to recent greenhouse gas regulations
- Judicial deference to regulatory authorities
- Preemption of state nuisance remedies by the federal Clean Air Act
- Contests to sizable penalties for regulatory violations
- Challenges to expert opinions regarding medical causation
- Contribution and cost recovery claims under environmental statutes
- Defense of mass torts and class actions based on toxic and environmental exposures
Faulk has authored and published materials for numerous law reviews, the Washington Legal Foundation, the Bureau of National Affairs, Westlaw Publications and the Institute for Energy Law in Texas. In 2015, he won his fourth William Burton Award for Legal Writing at ceremonies at the Library of Congress for an article on Clean Air Act preemption of public-nuisance claims.
Faulk has been listed as a "Leading Lawyer" annually in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business since 2004. He has been listed in Best Lawyers each year since 2008 and recognized in Super Lawyers each year since 2009.
Faulk is licensed to practice in Texas and the District of Columbia. He is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the Circuit Courts of Appeals for the Fifth, Ninth, and D.C. Circuits, and the federal district courts of the Northern, Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas.
Faulk received his law degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law after graduating from the University of North Texas.
