NEWARK, N.J., Sept. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alliance to Save Energy recently presented Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) with a prestigious Star of Energy Efficiency Award for the utility's efforts to make New Jersey hospitals and apartment buildings more energy efficient. Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) presented the award to PSEG chairman, president and CEO Ralph Izzo at the 23rd annual Evening with the Stars of Energy Efficiency Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. PSE&G is a subsidiary of PSEG.
"We are proud to accept a Star of Energy Efficiency Award for our efforts that help customers save energy and money while also helping the environment though improved efficiency," said Izzo. "But at the same time we are humbled by the considerable distance between where our nation is today in terms of energy efficiency and where we need to be. We have a big challenge ahead, and utilities like PSE&G can be instrumental in making energy efficiency as universally available as the safe, reliable electricity and gas that our customers depend on today."
PSE&G's Hospital Efficiency Program and Residential Multifamily Housing Program were cited in the Power Generation and Supply award category for their significant and tangible contribution to energy efficiency in New Jersey. Both programs provide upfront funding for efficiency upgrades in facilities where the initial cost of a retrofit is often prohibitive. Since 2009, significant energy efficiency improvements have been made at 33 hospitals and 41 residential multifamily housing facilities consisting of more than 10,000 individual apartments. To date, the two programs have saved enough electricity to power more than 9,000 homes for a year and enough natural gas to supply more than 3,500 homes for a year and both programs have a significant number of additional projects in the pipeline.
"The impressive achievements of this year's award winners and the opportunity to mingle with energy efficiency's elite have inspired excellent attendance and sponsorship of the Stars of Energy Efficiency Awards Dinner. In addition to the outstanding support of this 23rd iteration of the Awards Dinner, this year's new award categories, which recognize individuals for early-career accomplishments in efficiency, also show the field is continually advancing thanks to new and innovative ideas. I can't imagine a more powerful message than the recognition of what these companies and individuals are doing to ensure an energy-efficient future!" said Alliance to Save Energy President Kateri Callahan.
