Alliance Unveils New Distribution Transformers Sustainable Practices
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Electric Utility Industry Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance (Alliance) announced today the release of a collection of sustainable practices in the area of distribution transformer purchasing, management and disposal/reuse. The Alliance is an organization of electric utilities, including many of the country's largest utilities, with a goal to improve environmental performance and the advancement of sustainable business practices across the electric utility industry. Participants include supply chain executives from some of the country's largest utilities.
The Alliance has focused on distribution transformers because of the impact sustainable practices can have in this area for the energy industry. Estimates of annual distribution transformer shipments range from 700,000 to 1 million valued at over $2 billion in sales revenues. Transformers typically have a service life of about 35 -40 years with many in the US ending their useful life.
This document has been developed by the Alliance to support utilities and non-utilities with identifying sustainable practices in the area of Transformer purchasing, management and disposal/reuse. It is based on research conducted by the Alliance and input from member and suppliers, and other stakeholders.
The document is made up of 3 parts. The first provides a brief overview of the 3-4 high level sustainability practices in the area of transformer purchasing, management and disposal/reuse. The second provides a more detailed overview of the full set of practices. The third provides, where available, more detailed practices; details on specific practices; information on implementation costs, timing, strategies, lessons learned; or resources.
The Alliance encourages the adoption of these practices throughout the value chain on a voluntary basis, recognizing that individual suppliers and members will not be able to adopt all – or at times any – of these practices. Through anonymous member and supplier surveys the Alliance measures the adoption of these practices and evaluates opportunities to further encourage their acceptance.
