Alternative Petroleum Technologies Enters Agreement with Port of Los Angeles

LUXEMBOURG, March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Alternative Petroleum Technologies (APT) announced today that it has completed contractual arrangements and will begin a diesel emissions control technology demonstration at the Port of Los Angeles. The demonstration will take place as part of the Technology Advancement Program, a joint initiative of the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan with the Port of Long Beach.

APT will demonstrate the efficacy in Port cargo handling equipment of an emulsified biodiesel blend (a blend of water, B-20 biodiesel and a proprietary additive system) that mitigates the increase in NOx emissions generally associated with the use of biodiesel fuel.

Although biodiesel is an important element of developing low carbon fuel standards for the reduction of Greenhouse Gas, biodiesel conflicts with efforts to reduce NOx emissions in order to comply with established air quality mandates.  It has been documented that biodiesel increases NOx emissions compared to traditional diesel fuel anywhere from 2% to 10%.

APT has developed technology for an emulsified biodiesel blend that augments biodiesel's particulate matter and CO2 reductions with a reduction in NOx emissions. "Our technology is designed to mitigate the biodiesel NOx increase while improving the overall emissions profile of biodiesel," according to Patrick Grimes, President of APT.  He further stated, "The APT Technology has been commercialized in Europe at a major port in over 200 pieces of port equipment and vehicles for more than a year."
