American Association for Justice Announces Mary Alice McLarty as President for 2012-2013
WASHINGTON, Aug. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mary Alice McLarty was announced as the new president of the American Association for Justice (AAJ) at the annual convention in Chicago. McLarty will lead AAJ in its continued mission to protect the legal rights of Americans when they are injured by negligence or misconduct, even when it means taking on the most powerful corporations and interests.
"I'm proud to be a trial lawyer and a member of AAJ," said McLarty. "My goal is to get new and existing members excited about what this organization stands for—fighting to keep the court house doors open. We need to work together and face down the enemies of justice."
"Mary Alice has been an outspoken supporter of AAJ and trial attorneys for years," said outgoing president Gary M. Paul, a partner at Waters, Kraus & Paul in Los Angeles, Calif. "She will undoubtedly serve as a passionate and dedicated president for AAJ."
McLarty, of McLarty Pope Firm, L.L.P. in Dallas, Texas, has been practicing law for over 28 years, concentrating on catastrophic injury cases, including Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and brain injuries. She has been in several leadership posts at AAJ—serving on the Board of Governors and chairing the Women Trial Lawyers Caucus, the RSD/CRPS Litigation Group and the Sole Practitioner & Small Firm Section. In addition, she has been honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious Marie Lambert Award for her exemplary leadership to the profession, to her community, to AAJ, and to the Women Trial Lawyers Caucus.
McLarty is a strong advocate for all Americans' legal rights and has participated in a number of pro bono efforts, including serving with over a thousand other attorneys across the nation representing the victims of the 9-11. She has chaired the Domestic Violence Task Force several times, volunteered at the Dallas Convention center to help the Katrina New Orleans evacuees, and has served on the Texas state board of the American Cancer Society.
She has held leadership positions with the Texas Trial Lawyers Association and the Dallas Trial Lawyers Association, serving as their president in 2004.
McLarty graduated from West Texas State University in 1970 and earned her J.D. from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1983.
In addition to McLarty, AAJ's new set of officers includes President-Elect J. Burton LeBlanc of Baron and Budd, P.C. in Baton Rouge, La.; Vice-President Lisa Blue Baron of Baron & Blue Law Firm in Dallas, Texas; Secretary Larry A. Tawwater of the Tawwater Law Firm, P.L.L.C. in Oklahoma City, Okla.; Treasurer Julie Braman Kane of Colson Hicks Eidson in Coral Gables, Fla.; and Parliamentarian Laird M. Ozmon of the Law Offices of Laird M. Ozmon, LTD. in Joliet, Ill.
