ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Diabetes Association Pathway to Stop Diabetes® Grant Recipient Thomas Delong, PhD (University of Colorado School of Medicine) coauthored a study published today in the journal Science describing a possible explanation for how the immune system goes awry leading to type 1 diabetes. Understanding the misguided immune attack is a critical first step in identifying possible ways to turn it off, which may offer insight into new therapies to prevent or reverse type 1 diabetes.

Pathway to Stop Diabetes focuses on attracting the most creative and brilliant minds to diabetes research. The goal is to extend support to individuals just starting their independent research careers, as well as to exceptional scientists already established in other fields of research, who want to apply their expertise to diabetes research.

Dr. Robert E. Ratner, MD, FACP, FACE, the Chief Scientific & Medical Officer for the American Diabetes Association, is available to discuss the study and its possible impact on type 1 diabetes.
