NEW ORLEANS, April 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Everyone deserves to be safe when getting in and out of their own bed, according to Universal World Corporation chief officer, Marc Kullman.
Kullman, the inventor of the Freedom Cane Holder, has been a leader in the mental health awareness community. His groundbreaking work led him to create the National Bipolar Foundation that has been a pool of research and resources for people affected by the disorder. From this, he orchestrated the partnership for Medic Alert bracelets making them readily available for people that suffer from mental disorders.
Now, with Kullman's new endeavor, he continues his work on another issue that hits close to home. A very close friend of his, that requires the use of a cane to walk, sustained a serious injury while getting out of his bed during the night. "Every night he would balance his cane on a nearby chair within his reach. This particular night he lost balance while reaching for his cane and he fell and broke his hip. It was no surprise to me that this was the cause of his injury," Kullman recalls. "I thought to myself, there has to be a better way for people to safely get in and out of their beds with their canes and that is what led me to think up the concept and design for our new product, the Freedom Cane Holder."
Shortly after, Kullman assembled a team of top American engineers and together they designed and patented the Freedom Cane Holder with their own newly developed plastic polymer called H-Viewer. This revolutionary plastic is very strong and durable, very easy to keep sanitized, has a green fluorescent color making it easily visible at night, and is made in the USA. The Freedom Cane Holder is very easy to use and assemble. The bedside cane holder simply slides under your mattress and you can adjust its position anywhere on your bed to make your cane easier to reach.
It is well known that falls occur regularly and repeatedly in nursing homes and assisted living care homes. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), each year a typical nursing home with 100 beds reports 100 to 200 falls and many more falls go unreported. Patients often fall more than once with an average of 2.6 falls per person per year. An estimated 1,800 people die each year from falls and between 10% and 20% of falls result in serious injuries. Lora Haddox R.N.,B.S.N., a teacher of nursing, and a former director of nursing for 100 -200 bed nursing homes in Tennessee, Georgia and Louisiana talked with us about the Freedom Cane Holder and after speaking with her, it is very clear that falls are an all too common problem for people that require a cane to walk. "We would deal with falls on a daily basis. Even in an assisted living facility with full staff, you cannot always be there and predict when one of the residents will need to get out of bed. The majority of our falls occurred during the night. If we would have had access to a product such as the Freedom Cane Holder, I am sure that the number of falls would have greatly decreased. It is not just a physical injury that occurs with these people, it can also emotionally scar some people and it can get to a point where they are too afraid of falling to get out of their own bed."
The mission for the first ever bedside cane holder is to radically reduce the number of falls among people that require a cane to walk when they get in and out of bed. The Freedom Cane Holder will prolong an individual's ability to live independently in their home. This product is safe, reliable, easy to use and most importantly, affordable. People who own the Freedom Cane Holder will be given a new sense of independence and safety that is unmatched by any other product on the market.
