NEW YORK, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ana Tzarev Gallery is featuring Dispossessed, an exhibition of paintings representing the artist Ana Tzarev's deep sense of empathy for persons suffering from injustice and hardship through events and circumstances beyond their control. Ana Tzarev's childhood was marked by terrible adversity, the works in Dispossessed acknowledge the fact that she carries the personal knowledge of injustice while, at the same time, there is a subtle, strong message of hope conveyed through her powerful impasto technique and pure use of color:

As a child in Croatia I watched my country being dispossessed of liberty through year after year of partisan occupation and each conqueror was quite oppressive and different. I became indignant in my soul because it was unjust; almost everything my father worked for his whole life was taken away. Killing went on all around me. My mother's two brothers were executed for no good reason at all by different occupying forces; they were not political, they were just young adults in the wrong place at the wrong time. Twenty-seven bodies were dug out near my Uncle's home after a bombing raid; prisoners in chains were marched by my home almost daily to be executed in the cemetery which was just behind my house.
So dispossession of life, liberty, and goods is something that I know well, I experienced it. These paintings are a manifestation of my personal revolt against injustice and my profound empathy for innocent people who suffer through an element of history, or a political movement, or an act of nature.
Yet we can work to overcome devastation. My message is one of hope. Hope that we will learn from the past, develop a greater understanding of each other and possess the strength to act against future injustice. – Ana Tzarev
This powerful series of works is extraordinarily emotional and includes dramatic images as diverse as those provoked by the artist's reaction to the horror of the 2004 Beslan massacre and the proud, impoverished Mayan weavers of Guatemala.
The Ana Tzarev Gallery is located at 24 West 57th Street, New York City. The Gallery features the work of the artist Ana Tzarev as well as presenting special exhibitions of works by other artists consistent with Ana Tzarev's commitment to cultural awareness and social consciousness.
