An Assessment and Outlook through 2017
This research service analyzes the US general X-ray radiography imaging equipment market, which is transitioning toward more compact portable and modular digital technologies. The market segments evaluated are analog radiography, computed radiography (CR), and digital radiography (DR). The suites, mobiles, and retrofits sub-segments of the DR segment are also evaluated. Unit shipments, price, and revenue are estimated and forecasted for the 2009 to 2017 time period for each segment and sub-segment of the market. Other metrics including installed base, procedure volume, penetration rate, and market share are also estimated for 2012. An analysis of key market drivers and restraints is also provided.

• Revenue from US shipments of analog and DR mobiles was $Xmillion in 2012, accounting for X% of total market revenue.
CEO's Perspective
1. Price consciousness and improved ROI has led to growing demand for DR retrofits, which allow users to continue using functional existing equipment and share detectors across multiple imaging platforms.
2. Given the increased modularity of portable DR detector retrofits, the demand for analog systems that can be fully upgraded to include all of the benefits of DR functionality (e.g., positioning automation) is growing.
3. As the demand for CR readers shifts from the hospital to the non-hospital user segment of the market, CR user preferences are transitioning toward more compact, transportable, single-plate readers.
4. Competitors with comprehensive portfolios of analog, CR, and DR products that are compatible with competitors' equipment are best positioned to grow and gain market share in the US radiography market.
Scope
Product Inclusion
• Unless otherwise specified, the estimates in this study consider only commercial shipments of new, general X-ray imaging equipment that is used for clinical, diagnostic purposes.
• Products not accounted for in this study's estimates include:
- Pre-owned (e.g., used, refurbished, or re-manufactured) imaging equipment
- Dedicated dental, veterinary, industrial (e.g., non-destructive testing), security, podiatry, mammography, or small animal imaging equipment
- Transportable X-ray units with a maximum generator power output of less than 20 kW
- Dynamic X-ray imaging equipment including surgical C-arms, fluoroscopy units, and hybrid radiography/fluoroscopy (R/F) imaging equipment
- With the exception of DR detector upgrades and CR readers, any add-on components or upgrades not included at the original point of sale of general radiography equipment
• In order to avoid double-counting, the estimates in this study reflect only shipments that are realized by radiography equipment original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) (i.e., excludes shipments realized by distributors and other re-sellers). Similarly, shipments of DR detectors from detector suppliers to general radiography OEMs are also excluded from the scope of estimates provided in this study.
Geographic Regions
The estimates in this study consider shipments of radiography equipment that is shipped to customers within the United States, which is defined to include the following geographic regions:
• The 50 states
• Washington D.C.
• Puerto Rico
• The US Virgin Islands
Time Period
The estimates in this study pertain to the 2009?2017 time period. The historical period, base year, CAGR period, and forecast period of the study are specified as follows:
• Historical Period: 2009?2011
• Base Year: 2012
• CAGR Period: 2012?2017
• Forecast Period: 2013?2017
Definitions
Unit Shipments
• Units considered in unit shipment estimates must be categorized within one of the segments in the market segmentation section and meet the criteria in the product inclusion section of this study.
• For the purposes of this study, a "unit" is defined as an analog or digital radiography system, a CR digitizer, or a DR detector that is used to upgrade (i.e., retrofit) an existing radiography system.
• Unit shipment estimates consider only equipment that is shipped for delivery as of the end of the year indicated. Accordingly, pre-shipment sales or orders are not accounted for in estimates and projections.
Unit Prices
• With the exception of DR upgrades, unit prices refer to the total price of all components included at the original point of sale of analog, computed, or digital radiography equipment. This includes X-ray generators and tubes, patient tables, imaging receptors, computer workstations, and printers.
• Weighted average selling price (WASP) estimates are average prices weighed by the proportions of unit shipments contributed by individual competitors or market segments for the year indicated.
Revenue
Revenue estimates and projections are computed as the mathematical products of unit shipment and WASP estimates or projections for the year indicated.
Key Questions This Study Will Answer
