Ancient Wood Goes High-Tech at New 49ers Stadium
Historic Reclaimed Redwood Adds Local Soul and History to $1.2 Billion Levi's Stadium
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Levi's Stadium, new home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, is a monument to Silicon Valley's obsession with the latest, the greatest, what's new and what's next. But the reclaimed redwood featured throughout the stadium's suites and luxury boxes defies that ethos, while adding beauty, history and local soul to the new high-tech facility.
The premium old-growth redwood used for the new stadium comes from the historic Hangar One facility at nearby Moffett Airfield. The former U.S. Navy zeppelin hangar is one of America's truly unique structures and a Silicon Valley icon.
"The (49er) owners immediately fell in love with the story of this material and the look was perfect for the design vision," according to Tambra Thorsen, senior designer at HNTB, an architecture and engineering firm based in St. Louis that specializes in sports stadiums and similar projects.
Originally built in the 1930's, the mammoth structure became an air reconnaissance base during the Cold War, was later used by NASA and most recently served as the private jet hangar for Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
Ken Westrick, CEO & Owner of TerraMai heard of the pristine old-growth redwood coming out of Hangar One as part of its recent renovation and quickly moved to secure the entire lot of material, which amounted to five large semitrailer loads.
As a seasoned reclaimed wood hunter with a track record spanning four continents, and as a 25-year veteran of Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, Westrick knew this was a one-of-a-kind opportunity – both in terms of quality and story.
Reclaimed wood adds beauty, depth and story to any space – especially sleek, modern ones, such as Levi's Stadium.
In addition to the 49ers project, TerraMai's Moffett Field Redwood has been used in projects for Google, Amazon, Cartoon Network, and more. TerrraMai is also providing a large quantity of Moffett Redwood for the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital project at Stanford University.
