CHICAGO, Nov. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Andy Rooney, who died on Friday, wrote a TMS weekly column distributed to print and online publishers across the country for more than three decades. TMS launched the column to newspapers in November 1979.
Rooney, 92, best known for his "60 Minutes" segments on CBS Sunday nights, also brought his wry observations on everyday life to his weekly column. Much like his television segment, the column quickly became a fixture in the homes of many Americans.
Each week, Rooney would ruminate about everything from big business and politics to why we bother to make the wastebasket "look like something other than what it is." His homespun commentary on important issues to the most practical items in American life earned him an honor from his writing peers: the 2003 National Society of Newspaper Columnists Lifetime Achievement Award.
Insistent upon being known as a writer first, Rooney's writing credits extend to numerous television essays and shows, including "The Gary Moore Show," as well as articles for national magazines and 15 book titles, including his last 60 Years of Wisdom and Wit, 2009.
For 32 years, Rooney filed his column every Wednesday like clockwork -- even during vacations. Work was his fun. Rooney filed his last regular column for TMS in September. In late September, CBS announced that he would be making his last regular television appearance on October 2.
