Apperian Finds Over Half of Organizations are Deploying Mobile Apps for Extended Enterprise Workers

2016 Executive Enterprise Mobility Report Reveals Key Trends, Challenges and Strategies for Driving Adoption of Enterprise Mobile Apps

17 Feb, 2016, 09:00 ET from Apperian Inc.

BOSTON, Feb. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Apperian® Inc., the mobile application management (MAM®) and security company, today announced findings from its 2016 Executive Enterprise Mobility Report. The report surveyed a random sample of executives from a wide variety of industries on key challenges and opportunities of enterprise mobility programs. The report found that the number of enterprise mobile apps continues to grow as a means to fuel business strategy, with 57 percent of all organizations surveyed offering two to 10 custom enterprise apps and 23 percent of large organizations (10,000+ employees) deploying more than 20.

While 91 percent of organizations are targeting corporate employees, 51 percent of all companies are also currently providing apps to at least one type of "extended enterprise" worker – hourly workers, contracted employees and business partners – who are an important audience for enterprise mobile apps. The research also highlights that while significant business benefits can be gained by providing mobile apps that access critical backend enterprise systems, doing so presents a formidable security challenge, especially when IT must enable workers who are not using corporate owned or managed devices.

"Our research and experience suggests broadening the types of end users that are supported by apps – beyond full-time, in-office workers – produces the highest ROI for businesses," said Brian Day, President and CEO of Apperian. "This often requires a different approach than legacy EMM and MDM-based systems, which weren't built to accommodate BYOD and unmanaged devices. In these cases, securing and managing the app itself instead of the device is critical to enabling the wide range of workers who can benefit from these apps."

Whether they already have apps in place or not, 87 percent of all organizations plan to expand their app portfolio over the next year – the report uncovered roadblocks as well as the benefits they're after.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Key Benefits of Apps – Improving business processes was cited as the most desired benefit (30 percent), followed by improved productivity (23 percent) and competitive advantage at 20 percent.
  • Adoption Strategies Drive Satisfaction – Nearly 60 percent of businesses are mobilizing access to critical enterprise systems; 41 percent are offering key apps to employees and contracted workers and 35 percent (each) are promoting apps internally and hosting a corporate app store to help users find apps.
  • Apps with the Biggest Impact – For the second year in a row, productivity apps (note taking apps and office docs) ranked highest (56 percent), followed by field services apps (50 percent) and sales apps (44 percent).
  • Key Challenges:
    • Complexity of the mobile landscape – Two of the top challenges cited were complexity of the mobile landscape (multiple operating systems & management models) at 48 percent and reaching BYOD, contracted or unmanaged devices at 31 percent.
    • Security – 64 percent cited protecting internal network and infrastructure from mobile-based threats as a main concern, with compromised mobile devices at 60 percent and data corruption or theft at 57 percent.
    • Visibility – About half of survey respondents do not have basic visibility into what their users are doing on mobile devices. Slightly over half are able to gain insight into their enterprise mobile app deployments using analytics.
