HERZELIA, Israel, Nov. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/-- Viber, the contender for the free calls service crown, launched its Android version three months ago, challenging the current leader - Skype. Appreciate analysts looked into the relative performance of the two services. Viber who built its successful viral distribution on its address book harvesting capabilities, challenged Skype, which became synonymous with free internet calls and offers cross platform service.

Here's what we came up with:

Interesting to see, that in spite of Skype's dominance from the installed base point of view (4.5 times higher than Viber), daily installation figures for Viber and Skype are very close – a clear win for Viber, growing three times faster, relying only on the mobile arena as a distribution platform with iOS and Android versions. We have also noticed that Skype has the upper hand on the branding front, since there were 4.5 times more searches for the term "Skype" than searches for the term "Viber". This might be attributed to the fact that Skype is a generic term for internet calls. From the engagement point of view – usage levels of both apps are similar. The only gap that still needs to be closed by Viber is on the retention front – Viber users were 37% more likely to uninstall the app from their devices in the period we tracked. Again – this might be attributed to the narrower user base.

To sum up – Viber gained a nice traction among Android users, from both installation and engagement perspectives, but Skype is still the brand when it comes to VoIP calls.
