AQZ Gala Fundraisers Open Hearts to Save Hearts for Children with Congenital Heart Disease in Rural China
HOUSTON, July 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- AQZ Charity Foundation hosted their annual gala Sunday July 26th at the Hilton Houston Westchase Hotel to raise money for children born with congenital heart disease in rural China. The American division of the Chinese Foundation started in Beijing in 2012 was founded by Dr. Jianwei Feng of the Memorial Hermann Heart and Vascular Institute and Dr. Zheng Qu of BQZ Charity Foundation.
The event drew over 300 attendees from Houston and other international cities and included a three-course meal, benefit auction, and performances of traditional Chinese opera, dance, and music for guests.
Special attendees included actor Zhigang Yang, who gave a keynote speech at the event emphasizing the importance of contributing to the cause and all the good the foundation is doing for the economically disadvantaged families of rural China. "Helping others is a way of healing ourselves," said Yang during his speech to encourage patrons to give and participate as much as they could. Other special guests were actress Brenda Wang and performer Dong Fei, who both participated in the evening's performances.
Most of the event was presented in Mandarin, but as the foundation progresses into the future they are looking to give the event and the foundation a more cross-cultural environment. "I do all of this because as a young doctor in China I once witness a child patient turned away because of lack of funds. As an established doctor in the U.S., that memory still haunts me, so our goal is to make sure that no child is turned away again because of finances," said Dr. Feng of his foundation.
Certificates of achievement and recognition were presented to the foundation from the offices of Texas Congressman Al Green, Houston City Councilmen Ed Gonzalez and Richard Nguyen, and Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar.
Houston's ties with China are deeply rooted, and as national relations with China continue to improve, the foundation aims to start raising awareness and funds nationwide for the AQZ mission.
