Arizona Crime Prevention Association Adopts MyAssetTag.com's BikeGuard
Arizona's BikeGuard Community Aims to Reunite Recovered Bikes with Owners
TEMPE, Ariz., April 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- MyAssetTag.com supports BikeGuard registration on April 12, 2015 in the community of Tempe, Arizona. BikeGuard is a free national bike registry program. The Arizona Crime Prevention Association selected the BikeGuard program to help reunite recovered bicycles with their owners and deter potential thieves.
April is Tempe Bike Month and ridership is expected to increase. The city of Tempe will hold its 19th annual Tour de Tempe community bike ride on April 12. More than 1,000 participants are expected to participate in the free 10-mile bike ride led by Mayor Mark Mitchell and the Tempe City Council. The bike ride will be held from 7:30am-11am. Prior to the race and after its conclusion, residents can register their bikes on the BikeGuard website. Registration centers will be located in tents with laptop computers.
The BikeGuard program expects to expand to other towns in Arizona as approval is given. The BikeGuard registry system found success on New York's Roosevelt Island and several college campuses.
Residents will receive a small QR sticker to place on the frame of their bicycle. Arizonans enter bike return contact information into the system in case of bike theft or loss. When a member of the Arizona BikeGuard community finds a bicycle, a quick sticker scan can help reunite bike and owner with ease.
In 2013, residents and students reported 6,896 stolen bikes across Arizona. Tempe is hoping to see that number fall in 2015 with the April 12th bike registration.
Katelyn Gray, director of the BikeGuard program, said, "In the past we have registered college campuses and communities. We're excited to work with the Arizona Crime Prevention Association and the town of Tempe. The growth of our program indicates bike registries are helpful and do often assist law enforcement officers with thefts and returns."
"Most bicycles are stolen from places owners assume are safe. Experienced thieves can sometimes steal locked bikes. The best way to get your bike back is to register it before it is stolen," said Detective Jeff Lane of the Tempe Police Department. "The Arizona Crime Prevention Association is proud to partner with MyAssetTag. The Tempe Police Department is also proud to be the first department in the state to use this website as a bike theft deterrent and advises their citizens to register their bikes."
