NEW YORK, Jan. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Intuitive Surgical, Inc., already facing dozens of da Vinci robot lawsuits (http://www.davincirobotlawsuithelp.com/) alleging injuries due to the da Vinci Surgical System, released its 2013 fourth quarter earnings yesterday, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. Among other things, the company disclosed that it expects to sell fewer of the high-priced robots in 2014, though Intuitive also said that it expected to sell more of its lower-priced systems. According to a report from Reuters, Intuitive also declined to give a revenue forecast for 2014, stating it would do so later in the year when a clearer picture of business trends emerges, including those related to benign gynecology surgeries, which have been slowing in the U.S.

"Over the past year, the da Vinci robot has come under scrutiny as questions over its cost effectiveness and safety have mounted. Intuitive Surgical is also facing growing litigation over robotic surgery complications allegedly caused by the da Vinci," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free da Vinci lawsuit evaluations to individuals who allegedly suffered serious robotic surgery complications in procedures involving the da Vinci Surgical System.

In its most recent earnings report, Intuitive Surgical also revealed that it sold 138 da Vinci Surgical Systems in the fourth quarter of 2013, compared to 175 during the same quarter last year. For the entire year, the company sold 546 da Vinci robots, compared to 620 in 2012.
Over the past year, Intuitive Surgical has had to deal with growing controversy involving the da Vinci Surgical System. Among other things, Bloomberg.com reported in November that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) had seen reports of robotic surgery complications related to the da Vinci Surgical System double over the past year. For its part, the company maintains that the increase was related to the growth of robotic procedures, and that "total adverse event rates have remained low and in line with historical trends."
That same month, the FDA released the results of a physician survey that indicated training on the da Vinci robot might be an issue that is affecting its safety profile. While the 11 surgeons who responded to the survey reported generally favorable experiences with the da Vinci robot, they did suggest that the technology is difficult to master, and that a lack of consistent training methods may be having an impact on patient safety.
In a 10-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last October, Intuitive Surgical revealed that at least 50 da Vinci lawsuits had been filed in courts around the U.S. that allege the device caused serious, and sometimes fatal, robotic surgery complications to patients. According to Intuitive, these lawsuits claim that patient injuries were the result of defects in the device and/or issues with the way the company trains surgeons to use the robot.
Individuals who were allegedly harmed by the da Vinci robot could be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
