AT&T Sponsors High Line Open Studios Art Exhibit and Walking Tour in Chelsea October 14 - 16
NEW YORK, Oct. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* will sponsor the High Line Open Studios 2011 Art Exhibition and Walking Tour, showcasing the artists who live and work in the area around the High Line in New York City, beginning Friday, October 14 through Sunday, October 16. The artists' studios will be open 12 – 6 p.m. daily. This free, self guided tour begins at the West Chelsea Arts Building, 508-526 West 26th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues. The walking tour is free and open to the public.
A preview party will open the exhibition and walking tour on Thursday, October 13 at 551 West 21st Street from 6 – 9 p.m.
High Line Open Studios was created by artists for artists to raise awareness of the multitude of studios located among the galleries of the West Chelsea Arts district neighborhood of Manhattan. Since its inception in 2007, this annual event has grown from a single building on 26th Street to include studios that span the entire length of the High Line from 14th Street north to West 30th Street. This year featured artists will include Andy Warhol protege Ultra Violet, James Kennedy of Viewing Room, Jackie Lipton, Ian Mack and many others. A full list of the artists and a map of the walking tour can be found at www.highlineopenstudios.org.
"The High Line Open Studios is an important event as well as a great opportunity to step inside the artist's studios and visit with working artists," said Scotto Mycklebust, featured artist at High Line Open Studios. "It is a chance to explore the creative environment where the artist creates. It gives the artists an opportunity to build public awareness of their work and to share their artistic vision and build a collector base with continued support and interest. We're thankful to AT&T for supporting our vision to bring art to the people."
Open Studios gives visitors the rare opportunity to gain access to a multitude of artists, styles, and mediums in one place and experience the creative spaces generally only open by appointment. Visitors can preview participating artists online to create a self-guided art tour while enjoying the unique urban architecture of the High Line. This open format encourages dialogue between artists and enthusiasts allowing visitors to gain first hand knowledge about the creative process. Collectors have the ability to purchase works directly from the artists' studio inventory, giving them the opportunity to be the first to discover new talent before it makes its way to the gallery walls.
"We are proud to support this culturally important event for New York," said Tom DeVito, vice president and general manager for AT&T in New York and New Jersey. "AT&T believes strongly in the connections created by art and supports efforts to create a stronger sense of community across New York."
About High Line Open Studios:
High Line Open Studios evolved out of an annual grassroots movement by artists organizing to open their studios to the public. This movement, starting back as early as 2000, has been spearheaded by a handful of dedicated artists over the past decade. In 2007, a group of four artists — housed in the West Chelsea Arts Building at 526 W26th Street — formalized the annual event under the name of High Line Open Studios.
