CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* is keeping U.S. troops in North Carolina connected. But it doesn't stop there. We also might have a job for them when they finish defending the country.
As part of our continued military support in North Carolina, we're extending store hours at certain locations to accommodate the schedules of busy military members and their families. And we're discounting select wireless accessories by 25%. Both initiatives will continue through May, which is National Military Appreciation Month, and beyond.
We're also donating wireless device charging stations to the United Service Organizations (USO) of North Carolina. The USO provides support to tens of thousands of U.S. troops and their family members. Military members and their families can access the organization through their 6 service centers across the state and within travel lounges at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Raleigh Durham International Airport, Fayetteville Airport and Ellis Airport near Jacksonville.
"Military life is rigorous and demanding. Providing critical services and other things that ease a service member's burden goes a long way," said retired Army Lt. Col. John Falkenbury, president, USO of North Carolina. "AT&T has stepped up and set an excellent example."
But our support goes beyond keeping troops connected. On May 5, we doubled our military hiring commitment from 10,000 veterans to 20,000 by 2020. We employ more than 550 military veterans in North Carolina, and have more than 140 job openings in the state.
"We actively focus on recruiting veterans into career paths. The experience and skills they gain through military service are an invaluable contribution to our workforce," said Cristy Swink, vice president and general manager, AT&T Mid-Atlantic. "Veterans' leadership, integrity and commitment to service make them outstanding employees.
"We're also grateful for the sacrifices of men and women actively serving in the military, and the families who support them. We want them to feel welcomed and appreciated in our stores."
In 2013, we announced we would hire 10,000 veterans within the next 5 years. We met this goal at the end of 2015, well ahead of schedule.
Once employed, we ensure veterans have the skills needed to grow their career and succeed in the ever-evolving tech landscape. Our veterans' employee resource group also serves more than 9,000 members. It creates an instant community for veterans. This includes mentoring and helping other veterans in their transition process.
