AUA Announces 2019 Award Program Recipients

BALTIMORE, Dec. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Urological Association (AUA) is pleased to announce recipients of its 2019 AUA Awards Program. Each year, the AUA recognizes physicians, researchers, educators and other individuals for their outstanding career contributions to the field of medicine, the specialty of urology and the AUA. These individuals will be recognized at the Association's Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL next May. The following awards will be presented:

Ramon Guiteras Award: The Ramon Guiteras Award is presented annually to an individual who is deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the art and science of urology. Arthur D. Smith, MD will receive this award for establishing an innovative paradigm for the minimally invasive management of nephrolithiasis.

Hugh Hampton Young Award: The Hugh Hampton Young Award is presented annually to an individual for their outstanding contributions to the study of genitourinary tract disease. Paul F. Schellhammer, MD will receive this year's award for outstanding contributions to urologic oncology, especially prostate cancer and for tireless devotion to physician and patient education.

Gold Cystoscope Award: The Gold Cystoscope Award is presented annually to a urologist distinguished by outstanding contributions to the profession within 10 years of completing residency training. Trinity J. Bivalacqua, MD, PhD will receive this award for innovative translational research and significant contributions to the fields of sexual dysfunction and urologic oncology.

Lifetime Achievement Award: The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to an individual who has been deemed to have made outstanding contributions to advance the mission and goals of the AUA. W. Bedford Waters, MD will receive this award for advancing urologic oncology and inspiring diversity in the field of urology.

Eugene Fuller Triennial Prostate Award: The Eugene Fuller Triennial Prostate Award is given once every three years to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the study of the prostate gland and all its associated diseases. H. Ballentine Carter, MD will receive this award for outstanding contributions in the field of prostate cancer, specifically in the areas of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) screening and surveillance.

Victor A. Politano Award: The Victor A. Politano Award is presented annually to an individual for outstanding research and work in the field of incontinence and for enhancing the treatment of incontinent patients, thereby helping to improve their quality of life. Roger R. Dmochowski, MD, MMHC will receive this award for outstanding contributions to female pelvic medicine, the science of urodynamics and neurourology and surgical techniques for genitourinary reconstruction.

William P. Didusch Art and History Award: The William P. Didusch Art and History Award promotes and recognizes contributions to urological art, including, but not limited to, illustrations, sculpture, still photography, motion pictures and television productions. John M. Barry, MD will receive this year's award for outstanding artistic line drawings and photographs used in publications and for designing original urologic emblems.

Distinguished Contribution Awards: The Distinguished Contribution Awards are presented annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the science and practice of urology, including, but not limited to, contributions made in a sub-specialty area, for military career service or for humanitarian efforts. The following individuals will be recognized with this award:

• Steven C. Campbell, MD, PhD for sentinel research in the field of urologic oncology, especially in the area of renal neoplasia.

• James A. Eastham, MD for outstanding contributions to the treatment of prostate cancer and research on improving surgical outcomes including restoring normal urinary and sexual function. 

• Robert M. Sweet, MD for the systematic study, design and critical evaluation of surgical simulation in the field of urologic education.

Distinguished Service Awards: The Distinguished Service Awards are presented annually to individuals for outstanding service in advancing the goals of the AUA. The following individuals will receive this award:

• Kevin R. Loughlin, MD, MBA for outstanding leadership and support of the missions of the AUA, New England Section and the American Board of Urology.

• Randall B. Meacham, MD for an outstanding career of service to the AUA Board, South Central Section and ACGME Urology Residency Review Committee.

• J. Stuart Wolf Jr., MD for significant advancement through leadership and dedication to the Science and Quality of the AUA.

Gold-Headed Cane Award: The Gold-Headed Cane Award is presented to a senior urologist distinguished by outstanding contributions to the profession and the AUA. The inspiration for the AUA Gold-Headed Cane dates back to a highly respected tradition that began in the 17th century. The gold headed cane was first carried by Dr. Radcliffe from 1689 to 1714 and it accompanied him on many consultations in London, England. He was known by royalty for his medical skills and was considered an outstanding practitioner. Dr. Radcliffe was the first to pass the cane along to a successor whom he considered to be the greatest English physician of his time. AUA continues this tradition by presenting a Gold-Headed Cane Award to this year's recipient, R. John D'A. Honey, MD, for pioneering work in endourologic procedures and educating a generation of residents and fellows in minimally-invasive urology.

Presidential Citations: Presidential Citations are presented to individuals deemed to have significantly promoted the cause of urology. Each recipient is chosen by the AUA President. This honor will be bestowed upon the following individuals:

• E. David Crawford, MD for his tireless role in genitourinary cancer research, which has benefited countless urologic cancer patients.

• Fernando J. W. Kim, MD, MBA for advancements in robotic surgery and building relationships with the Brazilian and Portuguese urologic communities.

• Sushil S. Lacy, MD for tireless care of urologic patients, exemplary service to the AUA and mentorship of young urologists.

• Elizabeth R. Mueller, MD, MS for contributions in founding the field of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery and substantial research in this area.

• Hadley M. Wood, MD for founding the field of translational urology and improving the quality of patient care in this new area.

• Lori Agbonkhese for her instrumental role in developing AUA international relations and the initial Urology Core Curriculum.
