Auger and Auger brings even larger smile to the face of the Disabled Scholar Award winner
Christine McCarthy is the most recent recipient of firm's $1K scholarship - bringing her closer to turning dreams into reality
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Through their practice, the team at Auger and Auger has seen, first hand, the devastation that comes with disability. Each day, they work to not only represent the injured but to advocate for them as well.
In an extension of those advocacy efforts, the firm has implemented the Disabled Scholar Scholarship, a $1,000 essay-based award to assist extraordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances. This year's winner, Christina McCarthy, embodies the essence of the scholarship.
At the age of five, McCarthy and her family were travelling to a barbeque when her mother lost control of the vehicle they were in and hydroplaned into a ditch. McCarthy's injuries included a partially collapsed lung, a cracked skull, and a severed spine. Even after several surgeries, she was confined to a wheelchair and has been in and out of hospitals for her entire life.
Though those circumstances would lead many to be bitter, McCarthy does not let it sour her outlook on life. Her aspiration is to become a therapist and serve as a resource for others who have endured traumatic injuries. She believes wholeheartedly that we all choose the lens through which we view life and lives by the personal motto, "Put a smile on and everything will be alright."
Founding partner, Herb Auger, says "We observe firsthand the unique challenges that disabled men and women face and see the strength and perseverance necessary to overcome expectations."
The 500 – 1,000 word essay-based scholarship opportunity asks prospective recipients to write about one of three topics; overcoming your disability to do something extraordinary, how your degree will contribute to your short and long-term goals, or how your disability has made you unique.
McCarthy's strength shines through in her submission making her disability a non-issue by affirming her determination to take on every curve in the road and every hurdle she may face as a rung in her ladder to success.
"In creating this scholarship, we want students like Christina to know that they can succeed and that there are people here rooting for them each step of the way," says Auger. "With this scholarship we hope to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with taking those steps to achieving success."
