Australian Man fighting for his life in Mexico after refused Insurance Claim
VANCOUVER, Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ - Last July Ryan Maudlen and Katharina Reigl – who lived in Vancouver for the past two years, commenced on their dream journey traveling the Pan American highway from Alaska to Argentina. Unfortunately, on November, 17th their dream trip turned into a nightmare and now they are battling the insurance company that is refusing to cover his costs due to a technicality.
Ryan has suffered from Crohn's since he was 14, has been brought out of a medically induced coma after suffering severe blood poisoning following emergency surgery to treat the disease, which causes bowel inflammation.
Ryan is currently in Galenia Hospital recovering as his mother Deb, 64, and girlfriend, Katharina Reigl, 29, remain by his side 24/7 through this agonizing time.
The insurance company has refused to pay the bills, despite initially telling the hospital at least twice that it would fund the care, due to a technicality, involving the location where the insurance was purchased.
The family face financial ruin after being forced to pay for his urgent care following complications from emergency surgery, during which more than 60cm of his bowel was removed.
The total medical bill is estimated at more than $200,000 while a medevac flight back to Australia costs a further $160,000.
Ryan Maudlen was born and grew up in Modbury Heights, South Australia. He has always been a fun and outgoing person and has touched thousands of people with his generosity and adventurous personality.
His friends and family have been fundraising and pulling money together to support Ryan, and his mounting medical bills. So far this has been funded by Ryan and Katharina's savings and Ryan's working class parents. They have had to remortgage their house to send money over to Mexico and stated they would "do anything for their son, just like any parents would do".
