"People who read my book loved it and wanted more, so in the updated edition, in addition to other relevant issues, I'm tackling age issues of older women in the workplace and in social situations."
"Specifically, I'm supporting women's right to legally present themselves as the age they perceive they are."
Ms. Morris maintains that when the age of older women in the workplace becomes known, stereotypical thinking and behaviors of co-workers and bosses relating to competence begin to surface. This could be prevented with legalization of "perceived age".
Stereotypical thinking and attitudes also persist in social situations. Single older women who look and feel years younger than their age say that they can't find suitable male partners. Men as young as 65 often have significant health issues and women don't want to deal with potential caretaker tasks. Women find that younger men are drawn to an attractive older woman until they learn her age and then they look for a woman much younger.
Although Ms. Morris has been told legalized perceived age is not possible, she disagrees, citing Bruce Jenner's transition to a woman. She argues that today, anything seems possible, no matter how unconventional it is. She points to the Massachusetts woman claiming to worship pasta, and wanting to wear a pasta strainer on her head in her driver's license photo. The request was denied but reversed after the American Humanist Association filed an appeal.
"With those two victories, don't tell me we can't legalize perceived age. Women are tired of being the captive of a meaningless chronological number that can rule and/or ruin their lives. "
Ms. Morris invites those who support the "Perceived Age Now" movement to contact her. She is hoping to find a lawyer who champions legalized perceived age and will volunteer to take up the cause.
