Background: Blossom Ridge Scenic Age-In-Place Development Oakland Township, Michigan
OAKLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich., Feb. 16, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Blossom Ridge is an age-in-place development from The Moceri Management Company proposed in scenic Oakland Township, Mich. The community will serve both the elderly and residents with needs of varying levels. It will be a state-of-the-art facility with the latest amenities, within a cozy and familiar setting. The site provides a charming setting with lots of open space and natural surroundings.
Three types of residences will be offered at Blossom Ridge allowing residents to age in place among their friends. A lovely main building will provide 134 individual residences. The community will also contain 60 ranch style homes and 44 larger duet homes.
All levels of housing within the community will be ADA compliant, and all services will be available to every occupant as required and needed by each resident.
All of Oakland Township's third party professionals advised the Oakland Township Board of Trustees that the Blossom Ridge request for reasonable accommodation was appropriate, necessary and legally mandated. The Oakland Township Board did not follow the judgments of the professionals and voted unanimously to deny an accommodation to the disabled. Thus, the Township preserved its highly restrictive and exclusionary zoning regime, refusing even to grant a minor accommodation to enable the disabled to live in the Township.
According to Dominic J. Moceri, the Township Board caters solely to the desires of a few residents who care only for their personal preferences and convenience. In the words of Board member Jeanne Langlois (March 27, 2012): "Township residents are not asking for this type of senior housing and are content to look outside of the Township for this." In other words the disabled can live somewhere, just not here.
In responding to the Federal Court complaint of the Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America (MPVA), the Township doubled down on its lawlessness, even claiming the Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of American have no right to protect its members' rights in court. The Township's answer refuses to meet the merits of the case and interposes the technical procedural demand that only individual disabled persons should be permitted to bring the case.
Blossom Ridge will offer a wide range of both passive and active amenities. Dining, recreation, craft and game rooms will be included in the main building. A community center with a pool, fitness center, and bocce and pickle ball courts is planned in the heart of the community. A parcours fitness path with exercise stations will wind through scenic natural areas as well as developed portions of the site.
