Bahraini Olympic Runner Brings Home Bronze
Maryam Jamal Wins Bahrain's First Olympic Medal in the Women's 1500 Meter
MANAMA, Bahrain, Aug. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Maryam Jamal, a Bahraini competing in the Women's 1500 meter run, placed third at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games. Jamal finished in 4:10:74, just .51 seconds off that of the winner.
In an interview following the race, Jamal said that although an injury in May deprived her of two months of training before the games, "I never gave up, I always promised that I would give 100 percent as I reminded myself that I'm doing this for Bahrain, and I want to bring home a medal."
Jamal is a prime example of Bahrain's passion for sport and the government's commitment to advancing athletic national training programs. Jamal returned to Bahrain yesterday and was met with a proud reception celebrating her success on the international athletic stage.
