SCARBOROUGH, N.Y., Nov. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- When Thea Chassin, founder of Bald Girls Do Lunch, Inc. pulls off her hair in Tennessee, November 30 to December 2, she wants heads to turn. Bald Girls Do Lunch is coming to the state so women with the autoimmune hair loss disorder, alopecia areata, will share experiences – and for most it's a first. Bald Girls Do Lunch is the nation's only nonprofit organization created specifically for women with alopecia areata.

"Family and friends sure mean well, but women talking to each other is best," says Chassin. "The embarrassment of alopecia is a burdensome secret, especially for those with a childhood onset. Our goal is to help conquer and banish the feelings of shame once and for all."
The Tennessee events are taking place in Memphis (November 30), Nashville (December 1) and Knoxville (December 2). Advance reservations are required. The event invitation and details are online and also at www.BaldGirlsDoLunch.org. Call 800.578.5332 or contact [email protected] to learn more. Attendees are 16 or over with any form or duration of alopecia areata.
Frustrations such as being mistaken for a cancer patient are readily shared among the new friends at Bald Girls events across the country. Learning how to speak nonchalantly about the condition to colleagues, family or even a new date is made easier at women-only gatherings. Over the course of the meal, Chassin motivates and inspires with first-hand advice for living well – having enjoyed long brown hair for decades and losing it all since 1997.
She nurtures emotional support while mixing in beauty tips for lost hair, brows and eyelashes. Her fashion lessons demonstrate how to turn scarves into "hair buns", restoring comfort and confidence. Women attend wearing wigs or head coverings and some choose to test drive the bald look. All choices are welcomed. Women are encouraged by Ms. Chassin to be open about their alopecia so they can enjoy the fun of changing their looks to suit their mood and activities.
Bald Girls Do Lunch is a 501c3 public charity, founded by Thea Chassin in New York in 2007. Bald Girls Do Lunch events and beauty workshops have been held in 25 states. To expand the organization's efforts to reach even more women more quickly, donations are accepted at BaldGirlsDoLunch.org
