Ban Ki-moon welcomes Roerich Pact exhibition to New York
LONDON, March 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On April 15, the United Nations headquarters in New York will host 'The Roerich Pact. History and Modernity', an exhibition on the Treaty on the Protection of Artistic and Scientific Institutions and Historic Monuments, also known as the Roerich Pact.
It has been 80 years since the signing of the Roerich Pact, the first internationally recognised treaty that enshrined the idea that protecting cultural artifacts is more important than military necessity. To celebrate, the Pact, the first international treaty signed in the Oval Office, will go on display at the UN in an exhibition.
The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, underlined the exhibition's importance in his official letter: "This exhibition pays tribute to the groundbreaking Roerich Pact and bears witness to our determination to take its spirit forward. I wish to thank the International Centre of the Roerichs for organizing this inspiring display. I appeal to governments and people everywhere to come together to safeguard our common heritage and humanity."
The exhibition has been organized by the International Centre of the Roerichs and the Committee for the Preservation of the Roerichs' Heritage, with the support of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN. It will be sponsored by Protobase Laboratories, Transaero Airlines Ltd and CapitalBE.
The exhibition enshrines the idea of the great Russian artist, writer, thinker and peacemaker, Nicolas Roerich, of 'Peace Through Culture'. The exhibition includes numerous materials related to the history of the Pact and the Banner of Peace, the Pact's symbol. There are unique photos, original documents, copies of Roerich's paintings as well as the actual Pact itself.
These materials will allow visitors an insight into Roerich's mind when he developed the idea that has united the global community and created an international movement to preserve culture for future generations. Part of the display is about other UN peacekeeping activity, including historical and cultural exhibits not directly related to the Pact.
