REVELSTOKE, British Columbia, May 18, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Supporters are encouraged to visit http://savemacpherson.org/ and sign the petition at Change.org to advocate for more inclusive land use policy. There will be a public rally held May 21, 2:00pm at the Mt. Macpherson Nordic Lodge parking lot.
Local citizens have created SaveMacpherson.org in response to British Columbia Timber Sales' (BCTS) logging which is scheduled to occur between June 6, 2016 and Oct. 31, 2016. The goal is to convince BCTS to suspend all logging activities affecting Mt. Macpherson until a publicly acceptable solution is found.
Columbia River–Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald stated his views on planned logging in the Mount Macpherson recreation area in a May 10 media release.
"I have always fought for a return to local decision making," said Macdonald. "I believe strongly that the best decisions are made by those who are closest to the land. And my email inbox has been filled with messages that say exactly that."
"Today, I spoke with Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson once again about Mount Macpherson. I made it clear to him that the people of Revelstoke were committed to saving this important recreational and community asset."
Mt. Macpherson's unlogged trails offer a mature forest experience including hiking, mountain biking, Nordic skiing, and other activities. An early 2014 Economic Impact Report conservatively estimates 3,716 mountain bike users on summer weekends, with 60% of riders visiting from outside Revelstoke.
The Mt. Macpherson recreational area is located just 7 kilometers from downtown Revelstoke, directly across the Columbia River Valley from Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR). Just recently RMR announced a record-breaking increase of 20% in skier visits for the 2016 season.
SaveMacpherson.org encourages concerned citizens to write to The Honourable Steve Thomson, BC Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, sign the petition at Change.org, and attend the rally on May 21, 2:00pm at the Mt. Macpherson Nordic Lodge parking lot.
