SAN FRANCISCO, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- BCCI, a premier commercial contractor firm, is proud to announce the commencement of construction on the Clorox Headquarters Plaza waterproofing and renovation project. The 37,500-square-foot plaza will turn a worn walkway into a Downtown Oakland destination with generous seating and landscaping to accommodate Clorox employees and workers from nearby offices. Work on the multi-faceted project began in early June which turned a waterproofing project into an opportunity to create an aesthetically pleasing outdoor space. The design team created an inviting green landscape approach in the hardscape of the City.
"BCCI collaborated with Clorox, the City of Oakland and adjacent businesses to create an extremely detailed phasing plan that makes allowances for pedestrians to flow through the area," said Don Tiefenbrunn, LEED®AP, Vice President of Preconstruction for BCCI. "We will also work during off hours and evenings as much as possible to minimize construction impact on the area."
The adjacent Clorox office complex recently achieved LEED-EBOM® certification and while this project cannot be submitted for separate LEED certification, it is being built to stringent sustainable design specifications. Waterproofing of the plaza decking system is the primary objective of renovating the site; additionally, lighting controls will prevent the plaza's light fixtures from contributing to night sky pollution; permeable paving areas will be incorporated to better control watershed on site; and more planting materials and landscaping features will be added to the site. The planters will be filled with drought-tolerant indigenous plants to conserve water and promote native landscaping.
BCCI will install custom benches and planters that have been integrated into the site's overall design, along with pre-cast planters. The benches will be nestled amid the greenery to provide a refuge within the high-rise neighborhood. The plaza's paving pattern consists of light gray and brown earth tones, which will reflect sunlight and promote an open feeling in contrast to the former monolithic dark brown brick paving.
Clorox and BCCI are teaming with local schools on an accompanying beautification project. Students will add their artwork to the permanent barricades for the duration of the development.
In addition to BCCI, the Clorox Headquarters Plaza renovation construction team consists of: AECOM Design Management, architect; AECOM Design & Planning, landscape architect; WJE Engineers, structural engineer; and Nova Partners, construction management group.
