CLEVELAND, May 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Occasionally, Dominion East Ohio receives reports of people claiming to be employees who actually do not work for the company. To protect themselves from impostors, customers should always ask to see the employee's identification card.
All gas company employees have a photo identification card. If customers are uncertain whether someone claiming to be a Dominion employee actually works for the company, they can just request to see the employee's photo identification card for verification. Dominion East Ohio employees will be happy to show their company photo ID cards to customers.
Dominion also periodically receives reports of potential scammers targeting customers with schemes that present identity theft risks. For example, utility customers in other states have reported receiving telephone calls making false claims that President Obama has authorized federal credits to pay customers' utility bills. In some cases, scammers have asked customers to provide Social Security numbers to facilitate such payments or credits. According to reports, scammers also have visited customers in person, posted fliers and used social media and texting to send messages claiming that President Obama will provide a credit or directly pay utility bills.
While no such incidents have occurred within Dominion East Ohio service territory, in the event of such cases, customers should end any communication immediately and notify local police.
Dominion customers can also look for:
- A white Dominion East Ohio vehicle bearing the Dominion name and logo.
- A Dominion uniform of navy-blue pants; blue shirt; and navy-blue caps and jackets with company emblems. Some company employees wearing civilian clothes, such as construction and maintenance crews and supervisors, also may call on customers.
If customers have any further doubt, they should contact Dominion's customer service center at 1-800-362-7557. A customer service center representative can verify if one of the company's employees is scheduled to work on natural gas service at a customer's home or business.
