Big Island Air Offering Air Tours Over Kilauea's Active Lava Flows
The company's tours allow passengers to observe current lava flows from the air, including those in remote areas not open to the public.
KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii, Sept. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Big Island Air, Hawaii's oldest air tour company, is now offering tours that make it possible to observe dramatic views of Kiluaea's current lava eruptions from the air. The company's narrated "Twilight" and "Hilo Volcano" tours give passengers a unique perspective of the glowing lava below, including views of lava flows in remote areas that are not accessible to the public.
Kilauea, which has been continuously erupting since 1983, currently has two active areas. The first is the summit eruption within Halema'uma'u Crater, and the second lava flow is coming from the Pu'u'O'o vent in the volcano's remote east rift zone. According to the U.S. National Park Service at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the lava flows in the second area are "in a remote, unstable area that is closed to the public." Steve Lupkey, Owner and President of Big Island Air, explains, "Our Twilight and Hilo Volcano Tours make it possible for our passengers to experience the awe-inspiring fire and majesty of one of nature's greatest spectacles – the flow of molten, red-hot lava. And they can enjoy these spectacular views from the comfort of their window seat on our state-of-the art Cessna Grand Caravan EX aircraft."
Kilauea Volcano has been in the news recently. Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi declared a state of emergency on Thursday as the volcano advanced to within a mile of a residential area known as the Ka'ohe Homesteads. Big Island Air's air tours make it possible for individuals to observe the power of these volcanic eruptions from a safe distance. Reservations for air tours over Kilauea can be made at www.BigIslandAir.com or by calling 808-329-4868.
