Blizzard of Pollen Gripping South Texas; New U.S. Pollen Chamber Opens
SAN ANTONIO, Jan. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- While the rest of the nation battles frigid cold and snow storms, South Texans are dealing with a massive blizzard of pollen. Record-breaking Mountain Cedar pollen counts - the worst since the 90s - are causing even the least symptomatic to suffer.
Mountain Cedar, the most prolific pollinating tree in the world, is a drought-tolerant evergreen shrub or small tree, most prevalent in South Central Texas. The pollen can cause a severe allergic reaction during the winter months, with strengths 20 to 30 times worse than its nearest competitor, Ragweed.
Allergy sufferers are seeking medical attention in droves for relief during the remainder of the two-month pollen period, which usually concludes the second week in February.
Nationally renowned allergist and pollen specialist Dr. Paul Ratner, who heads up Sylvana Research in San Antonio and is on the cutting edge of Mountain Cedar pollen studies, says, "In all my life, I have never seen so much Mountain Cedar pollen, especially in the Texas Hill Country. To call what is happening a blizzard of pollen would not be an exaggeration."
Dr. Ratner, along with other area allergists, are excited about the opening of a brand new environmental pollen chamber to study the effects of Mountain Cedar and other pollens on test subjects. Only seven such chambers exist in the entire world. The newly opened San Antonio pollen chamber is only the second of its kind in the United States - and the first to study the effects of Mountain Cedar pollen.
