Boron is a relatively rare and extremely valuable mineral found in earth's crust. Industrial production of pure boron is difficult, as boron tends to form refractory materials containing small amounts of carbon or other elements. Elemental boron has limited commercial as well as industrial applications. Boron ores are mined to extract minerals such as colemanite, kernite, tincal, and ulexite. Commercially important boron compounds such as borax, boric acid, sodium metaborate, sodium perborate, boric oxide and boron trifluoride are derived from boron minerals. Most critical boron deposits are located in Turkey, Russia and the U.S. In addition, boron deposits have been found in Chile, Tibet and Romania.
Boron compounds are used in several industrial applications such as borosilicate glass, fiberglass, agriculture, ceramics, and detergents and soaps. Other applications include cellulose insulation, tanning and as a fire retardant. Boron compounds are also used in cementation of iron, as fibers and filaments in composites with metals or ceramics, in special-purpose alloys, for nuclear reactors, as a shield for nuclear radiation and in instruments used for detecting neutrons. Boron-containing reagents are also used as intermediates in the synthesis of organic chemicals and as dopant for semiconductors.
In terms of volume, borax accounted for more than 44% of the global boron compounds market in 2013. The segment is expected to witness high growth in the next few years due to increase in demand from different growing end-use industries in emerging economies in regions such as Asia Pacific and Latin America. Boric acid is another widely used industrial boron compound, apart from borax. Increase in demand for borosilicate glass and fiberglass is expected to increase consumption of boric acid in the next few years. Other boron compounds such as sodium metaborate, sodium perborate, boric oxide and boron trifluoride are used for tanning, specialty ceramics and cellulose insulation applications.
Among all the applications, fiberglass is the largest application driving the global boron compounds market.
