BOWE BELL + HOWELL Processes Vote by Mail Envelopes With Parascript's Technology During 2010 Primary Elections

BOULDER, Colo., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Parascript, LLC, the image analysis and pattern recognition technology provider, today announced that its signature verification technology was used during the 2010 primary elections to process incoming Vote by Mail (VBM) envelopes in two counties in California. Between the two counties, over 100,000 envelopes were handled on industry-leading Criterion sorting systems from BOWE BELL + HOWELL (BBH) that utilize Parascript's SignatureXpert software for signature verification. This greatly reduced the manual effort required for processing these envelopes.  

The vote-by-mail solution from BBH was first used in 2007 and has been used by BBH clients in every election since 2007, including the 2008 presidential election.

The VBM sorting system from BBH is built on its sorting technology that has been leading the commercial sorting market for decades. The system efficiently verifies and sorts incoming envelopes in a single pass. Verification includes signature matching, thickness checks (to check for no ballot and for more than one ballot) and envelope barcode identifier validation. Sorting is based on a combination of the verification result, existing challenge codes, if any, and the voting precinct defined by the county. Parascript's signature verification technology was used to perform image cleansing, to locate the signatures on the envelope images and to verify signature authenticity.
