Golovkin, who was born in Karaganda, was awarded his EXPO-2017 Ambassadorship last night at a reception in Washington with Akhmetzhan Yessimov, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC National Company Astana EXPO-2017.
"It's a big honor for me to receive the status of Astana EXPO-2017 Ambassador," Golovkin said upon accepting his ambassadorship. "EXPO-2017 is a very important event for Kazakhstan and for the world as a whole. I think I'll be able to make my contribution to the development and promotion of this event."
"I would like to underscore that it's an honor for me to represent our country, to raise our flag and to present victories to all of Kazakhstan regardless of at which arena I am fighting," Golovkin said.
Since the middle of the 19th century, the level of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by nearly 40 percent. Global leaders have sought to find ways to manage the CO2 as energy generation has increased by more than 150 percent over the past 40 years. With production of electricity and heat responsible for 42 percent of the contamination of the atmosphere, EXPO-2017 will look for ways to reduce that number without reducing quality of life for the individual.
"The topic of the EXPO is the Future Energy; today it's a very timely topic, " Yessimov said. "One of the reasons for current crisis in many countries is the price for energy." He added, "Even though Kazakhstan is very rich with a lot of mineral resources and energy resources, we're working for the future."
The EXPO, beginning June 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan, aims to search for solutions to energy challenges of the 21st century, create a long-term social and economic legacy, awaken a sense of responsibility for all people in respect to global energy challenges and to promote the best practices in energy production and sustainable development. Previous International Specialized Expos include 1998 Lisbon (Portugal), 2005 Aichi (Japan), 2008 Saragoza (Spain), and 2012 Yeosu (Korea).
