BOSTON, Oct. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Breckinridge Capital Advisors, a Boston-based investment advisor, announced today a new method for analyzing cities and counties that is the first of its kind to combine measures of economic success with social progress. This innovative approach enables the firm to reach beyond more-widely accepted, sustainability-focused investment analyses and emphasize inclusiveness as a potential key determinant of long-term investment performance.
"We believe that our new city/county framework represents a natural progression in our ongoing efforts to understand what makes communities thrive over the long term, within the context of a dynamic and continuously changing world," said President Peter Coffin.
The two main components of the city/county framework include Economic Metrics and Inclusiveness Metrics. The Economic category includes a range of traditional economic indicators for cities and counties. The Inclusiveness category is modelled after the globally recognized Social Progress Index (SPI) and evaluates cities and counties on three key dimensions: (1) Basic Human Needs, (2) Foundations of Wellbeing, and (3) Opportunity.
The impetus for the new city/county framework is the firm's belief that communities that are thriving both economically and socially will be more attractive to talented and diverse citizens as well as companies that will continue to enhance these communities and ensure their social and economic stability over the long term. As such, Breckinridge believes that inclusive communities should exhibit stronger creditworthiness, and offer greater opportunity and lower risk for investors.
Since 2011, Breckinridge has fully integrated environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into its investment process. Breckinridge continues to examine a wide variety of financial and non-financial metrics to evaluate municipalities. This new framework is meant to enhance its research and reward cities and counties that prioritize long-term social well-being and economic prosperity for all.
More detail on the city/county framework is available here on Breckinridge's website.
