IRVINE, Calif., July 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its HEVC-enabled system-on-chip (SoC) technology will allow NETServicos, Latin America's largest multi-service cable company, to deliver live broadcasts of select 2014 World Cup events in Ultra High Definition (Ultra HD). The demonstration is powered by Broadcom's flagship BCM7445 Ultra HD video decoder system-on-a-chip (SoC) with high efficiency video coding (HEVC) compression. The live broadcast will be made available to World Cup enthusiasts in select venues throughout Brazil, including many installations in customer households where a 4K TV is already available. This month's live Ultra HD broadcasts of the World Cup represent a significant proof point of Ultra HD adoption, as TV display prices continue to become more affordable and service providers increase delivery of 4K content. According to market information advisory firm DisplaySearch, the 2014 World Cup is expected to boost sales of Ultra HD TVs as football fans look to experience the vivid, lifelike images enabled by Ultra HD.

The delivery of Ultra HD TV requires a more efficient compression codec, made possible by the use of the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard. Broadcom's HEVC-enabled chipsets significantly speed the transmission of 4K content, alleviating the bandwidth burden that 4K, 60 frame-per-second transmissions require. This allows operators and users to receive Ultra HD content in half the time, at 50 percent of the bit rate previously required.
