Brown's Compounding Center's Quality and Safety Standards Earn National Approval from Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board
PCAB accreditation recognizes Brown's commitment to high quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement standards; assures patients receive high-quality medication.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Brown's Compounding Center, a Colorado pharmacy that creates customized prescription medications to meet individual patients' needs, today announced it has achieved accreditation from the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB), a service of Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC). The accreditation recognizes Brown's commitment to meeting and exceeding the highest national quality standards.
"Doctors and patients across the United States rely on Brown's because they know we put quality, safety and patient care first," said Darby Brown, RPh, founder and CEO of Brown's Compounding Center. "We're pleased to have earned the PCAB's independent validation of our work and look forward to continuing to lead the industry in exceeding high standards for quality and safety."
During the accreditation process, independent third-party evaluators assess a pharmacy's system for assuring and maintaining staff competency, inspect facilities and equipment, review records and procedures required to prepare quality compounded medication, verify that the pharmacy uses ingredients from FDA-registered and/or licensed sources, and review the pharmacy's program for testing compounded preparations. PCAB accreditation reflects an organization's dedication and commitment to meeting standards that facilitate a higher level of performance and patient care.
Evaluators also verify that the pharmacy is licensed to do business in each state where it operates. From its state-of-the-art pharmacy in Englewood, Brown's pharmacists create personalized medications for patients in 42 states and counting. Brown's new 38,000-square-foot facility, opened in February 2014, includes a $2 million clean room that allows Brown's to meet the growing demand for prescription medications tailored specifically to individual patients' needs while maintaining the strictest standards for safety, quality and patient care.
"In more than 15 years of consulting on sterile compounding, I have yet to come across pharmacists more committed to quality and safety than Darby Brown and the Brown's Compounding team," said Eric Kastango, founder of Clinical IQ, an independent consulting company that played a critical role in designing the world-class, 7,000-square-foot sterile clean room in Brown's Compounding Center's new facility.
PCAB was founded in 2007 by eight of the nation's leading pharmacy organizations, including the American Pharmacists Association and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, to create voluntary accreditation designation for the compounding industry. The organization promotes, develops and maintains principles, policies and standards for improving the quality of pharmacy compounding nationwide. In 2014 PCAB accreditation became a service of ACHC, whereby ACHC administers the PCAB accreditation program. For more information about PCAB accreditation, visit www.achc.org.
