HOUSTON, June 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Randy Burton, Partner in the Houston office of Burleson LLP, will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Swansea University in Wales on July 16 at the school's annual graduation ceremony.
The designation, which is the highest honor the university can bestow, is being given to Burton in recognition of his work with Swansea University College of Law to establish an International Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People.
Through the organization, which opened in 2012, lawyers provide pro-bono counsel on individual cases and engage in strategic public law litigation. The nonprofit also connects children with advocacy services and provides education and training resources to professionals involved in adjudicating children's rights and protecting the well-being of children.
The Observatory is modeled after the organizational structure and protocols of Justice for Children, a nonprofit founded by Burton in 1987. Justice for Children assists abused and neglected children across the United States through public policy monitoring, guidance through the child protective system, professional referrals, research, education, and emotional support.
Burton, who has practiced commercial litigation for nearly three decades, said the Observatory has the potential to completely transform the global protection of children's rights and related research.
"This organization is quickly becoming an international destination for child advocacy," explained Burton. "Although the Observatory is still in its infancy, we're building an infrastructure that can be replicated throughout the globe. We're establishing the tools and resources necessary to deliver worldwide education to professionals in child welfare and ultimately give them the insight and understanding they need to intervene and support a child when the system fails.
"It couldn't be more humbling to be a part of these efforts. It's a tremendous honor to receive this Honorary Doctorate of Letters and to collaborate with the professors at Swansea University College of Law to do what's right for children everywhere."
Burton began his work in child advocacy after growing increasingly frustrated with the struggle – and sometimes inability – to successfully prosecute offenders and protect children. He gained particular attention for his special investigations into the reporting and prosecution of child abuse cases, and has appeared on ABC's Prime Time Live, 20/20, Good Morning America, HBO, CNN, and the Nancy Grace Show.
In his practice at Burleson, Burton focuses primarily on commercial litigation for the oil and gas industry and has successfully litigated on behalf of numerous exploration and production, service, and midstream companies. His extensive background includes the successful trial and appeal of one cloud on title case, and the litigation and appeal of two constitutional challenges to property taxation, both to the Texas Supreme Court. Burton is experienced in the Uniform Commercial Code, primarily Article 2, and has litigated warranty and indemnity claims for and against numerous manufacturers.
