Buzzfeed censors viral Personhood USA post exposing Planned Parenthood
NEW YORK, Sept. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Buzzfeed staff deleted Personhood USA's viral post "8 Outrageous Things Planned Parenthood Was Caught Doing" without warning on Thursday, amidst criticism from The Guardian and other mainstream media about allowing criticism of Planned Parenthood on their popular site.
Buzzfeed retroactively enforced new community guidelines on Personhood USA that did not exist when the post was created. The post allegedly violated a newly created policy prohibiting "personal attacks" against "persons or groups." The guidelines do not distinguish between "attacks" and what is "usefully critical of something."
Nearly 150,000 people viewed the wildly-popular "listicle" and more than 25,000 liked it on Facebook. Pro-choice uproar denouncing the post inspired Buzzfeed to rethink their community contribution system. At first, Buzzfeed adopted a Personhood USA-specific disclaimer which denied all responsibility for the post.
"Buzzfeed broke the mainstream media's unspoken code of conduct when they allowed thoughtful criticism of Planned Parenthood on their website," said Josh Craddock, Personhood USA Staff writer and United Nations Liaison. "Sadly, Buzzfeed capitulated to the pro-choice lobby by shutting down the free press and censoring speech that would dare expose the abortion industry's horrifying misconduct."
Personhood USA's post criticized Planned Parenthood based on well-documented evidence caught on film by investigators from Live Action.
