CA Local Government Groups Overwhelmingly Oppose Prop 46, Concerned It Is "Far Too Costly"
Legislative Analyst: 46 could hike gov't costs up to "several hundred million dollars annually"
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the No on Proposition 46 campaign announced that two more leading local government associations have joined the ever-expanding list of state and local government groups who stand in firm opposition to Prop 46, because it will sharply increase costs for consumers, taxpayers and local governments in California. In fact, every organization representing local governments in California that has taken a position on Proposition 46 has come out in opposition.
In taking a "NO" position on Prop 46, the League of California Cities and the Urban Counties Caucus have joined a long list of local government leaders opposed to the year's most fiscally-reckless ballot measure -- including: California Special Districts Association, Rural County Representatives of California, California Association of Joint Powers Authorities, California School Boards Association, Association of California School Administrators, California Association of School Business Officials, and the City of Long Beach.
The announcement comes weeks after California's independent Legislative Analyst reaffirmed in its official analysis that Proposition 46 could increase state and local government costs by "several hundred million dollars annually."
"At a time when California's local governments are working hard to balance budgets and be responsible stewards of the taxpayer dollar, Proposition 46 is far too costly," said Jim DeBoo, Campaign Manager for the No on 46 campaign. "Proposition 46 will increase the burden on California state and local governments by hundreds of millions of dollars, reducing funding available for local services including police and fire, libraries, parks and road infrastructure."
These local government leaders from across the State join a growing list of California organizations that have announced their opposition to the high cost of Proposition 46, including (partial list):
