LONG BEACH, Calif., Mar. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Long Beach skyline will look drastically different as the city's iconic landmark, the Queen Mary, shuts off her lights from 8:30-9:30 p.m. in collaboration with Earth Hour, an international event sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund bringing awareness to climate change and energy conservation.
The ship's horn will mark the start of Earth Hour, and its many exterior lights will go dark and interior lights will be minimized. Guests and the community can participate by joining a special Earth Hour candle light reception from 7:30-9:30 p.m. with "unplugged" entertainment, organic cocktails, complimentary hors d'oeuvres, prizes and energy efficiency demonstrations under the ship's grand smokestacks on the darkened Sports Deck.
No stranger to going dark, the Queen Mary was known as the "Grey Ghost" during her WWII service when she transported troops camouflaged and with her lights off at night to avoid being spotted and fired upon by German submarines. The ship's historian Will Kayne will be available to speak to guests about her history.
