CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Cambridge College announced that an honorary doctor of humane letters will be presented to Thomas M. Menino, Mayor of Boston, and Dr. Ian Smith, best-selling author, physician and TV personality. The 42nd Commencement Exercises will take place on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Bank of America Pavilion.
A national leader on neighborhood issues, Mayor Menino believes that government is about helping people. Elected five times as Mayor of Boston and five times as a City Councilor from Hyde Park, he has spent a lifetime building a better Boston for residents and businesses. Over the course of his unprecedented five Mayoral terms, Mayor Menino has focused on providing the residents of Boston with quality education, affordable housing, safe neighborhoods and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Some of Mayor Menino's numerous accomplishments and accolades include bringing the Democratic National Convention to Boston in 2004, positioning the City of Boston as the third greenest city in the United States in 2008, and fighting for commonsense gun reform legislation in his capacity as co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition. In 2006 he was president of the United States Conference of Mayors, and was named "Official of the Year" in 2001 by Governing magazine for effective neighborhood development in Boston. This model has spread to other cities as a result of its effectiveness.
