NEW YORK, Feb. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- With the presidential election months away, a newly launched campaign has kicked off a decidedly apolitical discussion. Fed up with an underwhelming election cycle, NJOP founder Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald is taking to the streets and to YouTube promoting a new ticket… the 'Shabbat Party' in advance of this year's Shabbat Across America and Canada (SAA/C) scheduled for March 4th, 2016. "Growing tired of repetitive political speeches, punditry and polls?" asks Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, founder of NJOP. "We are taking a cue from all that is good about an election season… the opportunity to reflect on personal and communal values. I'm tired of the current political process, so I've launched a campaign of my own on the Shabbat Party ticket, just in time to unite people for a truly unique annual experience we call Shabbat Across America."
On Friday night, March 4, 2016, individuals, neighbors, friends and communities nationwide will unite in the celebration of Shabbat at more than 550 locations. Each year, SAA/C, sponsored by not-for-profit NJOP*, (www.njop.org), hosts thought-provoking Shabbat experiences in neighborhoods throughout North America. Now, in its 20th year, SAA/C has hosted more than one million experiences.
In a series of videos produced and directed by breakthrough Jewish comedian Mendy Pellin of Talk Yiddish to Me fame, Buchwald announces his candidacy and invites Americans to join the movement that matters most...the experience of Shabbat. The videos, which highlight the virtues of unplugging from devices and connecting with family, friends and self, are released one per week and shared through NJOP's social media channels (@JewishTweets and Jewish Treats on Facebook) and on their website.
"I'm here today to tell you to step away from your computers. Put down your smartphone," continued Buchwald. "Embrace Shabbat! See you all on March 4th."
Conceived of in 1997 by Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, SAA/C is designed for the North American Jewish community. Encouraging host locations to customize the experience for their communities, NJOP makes it simple for participants by providing the Shabbat Across America and Canada Handbook, educational templates, blessings and prayers.
