Canary Foundation Partners with Cervelo; Announces Canary Century Cycling Event Benefiting the Stanford Cancer Center
SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Canary Foundation has teamed up with Cervelo, a high-end cycling company out of Toronto, Ontario, to raise funds for cancer early detection research through the 2011 Canary Century cycling event. The 2011 Canary Century — to be held on May 28, 2011 immediately following the Tour of California — will specifically benefit the Stanford Cancer Center in Stanford, California.
Don Listwin, Founder of Canary Foundation, says of the event: "We're so grateful for the generosity of Canary's friends and are positive that the Canary Century cycling event will further engage our community and accelerate early cancer detection efforts at the Stanford Cancer Center." Canary Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to the principle that the best way to reduce mortality and suffering from cancer is to detect it early.
"At the Stanford Cancer Center, researchers from various medical fields and disciplines come together to transform the latest detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention discoveries into the most advanced patient care available. The Canary Century, under the leadership of Canary Foundation and Cervelo, will further bolster the Stanford Cancer Center's role in cancer early detection," remarks Beverly Mitchell, MD, professor of medicine and director of the Stanford Cancer Center.
Founded in 1996, Cervelo engineers and markets high performance road and triathlon bicycles. Known for their highly innovative approach to product development, Cervelo has succeeded by deliberately not adhering to conventional wisdom, choosing instead to begin every project from first principles. Cervelo desires to leverage its market-leading position in cycling to raise awareness and drive funding for the socially worthy cause of cancer early detection.
"We're excited to collaborate with Canary in bringing a century cycling event to the peninsula," says Tom Fowler, Corporate Development Officer of Cervelo. "Similar to our approach to product development in cycling, Canary's unique model for cancer early detection is progressive. We hope that an event like the Canary Century will further unite Canary's mission, vision, and strategy with the Bay Area community."
The event will occur on May 28, 2011 in Palo Alto, California and will kick-off the cycling season for many Bay Area residents. Cycling participants will be able to choose between a Century ride of 100 miles, a Metric Century ride of 62 miles, and a 50-kilometer ride. All rides start and finish at the VA Health Care System in Palo Alto, California. For more information and to register, visit www.canarycentury.com.
