NORWALK, Conn., April 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US announces Cancer Network features special coverage of Financial Toxicity. The out-of-pocket costs of cancer treatment, even for patients with health insurance, can be overwhelming. While researchers worry about the effects of the physical toxicity of cancer treatments, the financial effects of these treatments may be even more profound. Thus, Duke University researchers Amy Abernethy and S. Yousuf Zafar have coined the apt term "financial toxicity" to describe the life-altering effects on cancer patients of the costs they bear for their treatment.
In Part I of a two-part Practice & Policy series by that name, Abernethy and Zafar explore the dimensions of the financial toxicity problem and the reasons for its escalation. They note that the sort of cost-sharing arrangements that maybe quite equitable for patients with other chronic diseases result in outsize expenses for patients with cancer, in large measure because of the high cost of chemotherapy drugs.
In Part II, the authors consider steps that might be taken to help reduce cancer patients' financial distress. At the very least, the authors note, everyone in cancer care delivery and health policy needs to be aware of the scope of the problem.
