Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center To Honor Ruth & Martin Weil And Dr. Deane Wolcott At Annual Gilda Award Gala
Comedian Sandra Valls to Emcee
LOS ANGELES, May 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Cancer Support Community Los Angeles, The Benjamin Center (CSC) presents its annual Gilda Award Gala, May 12, 2017 at the InterContinental Los Angeles, Century City. The evening of achievement and celebration will honor Ruth and Martin Weil with the "Wellness Award" and Dr. Deane Wolcott with the "Harold H. Benjamin Innovation Award." Comedian, actor and activist Sandra Valls will host the Gilda Award Gala, named for the late, legendary comedian Gilda Radner.
The "Wellness Award" honorees, Ruth and Martin Weil, were each raised with the principle that charitable giving was a family value. Their focus on cancer research and patient support came after the loss of family members to cancer. The Weils were early and committed supporters of the CSC, serving on the board of directors and volunteering in the center. Martin passed away from cancer in 1996. The Weil Family Room at CSC was named in their honor.
Dr. Deane Wolcott, the recipient of the "Harold H. Benjamin Innovation Award," is a renowned psychiatrist and expert on psychosocial support services in oncology and palliative care. A UCLA trained psychiatrist, Dr. Wolcott has spent the last 38 years providing care to cancer patients, their family members, and caregivers in the hospital cancer care setting.
CSC's mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. In 2009, The Wellness Community and Gilda's Club joined forces to become the Cancer Support Community. The combined organization provides the highest quality social and emotional support for people impacted by cancer through a network of 45 licensed affiliates, more than 120 satellite locations and vibrant online and telephone communities, touching more than one million people each year.
