Cardiology Leaders from NYU Langone Medical Center Recognized by American College of Cardiology

NEW YORK, April 4, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In recognition of their contributions to the greater understanding of heart disease, two nationally renowned cardiac clinician-scientists from NYU Langone Medical Center were recently honored with prestigious awards by the American College of Cardiology (ACC). The awards were presented at the ACC's Annual Scientific Sessions on April 4, 2016 in Chicago.

Judith Hochman, MD, was awarded the ACC's Distinguished Scientist Award in the Clinical Domain in honor of her contributions to the cardiovascular profession, and Sripal Bangalore, MD, was awarded the Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Award in honor of his contributions to cardiovascular research.

Judith Hochman Presented with Distinguished Scientist Award: Clinical Domain

The Distinguished Scientist Award in the Clinical Domain is awarded to a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology who has made major scientific contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of cardiovascular disease. The award is given to three recipients in the basic, clinical, and translational domains. Dr. Hochman received the award in the clinical domain for her outstanding contributions to the field. Dr. Hochman is the director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center at NYU Langone, as well as the Harold Snyder Family Professor of Cardiology, associate director of the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology, and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Sciences at NYU Langone. She also serves as co-director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

During her career, Dr. Hochman has led multiple National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute-sponsored (NHLBI) international clinical trials. Currently, Dr. Hochman is leading an NHLBI funded comparative effectiveness ISCHEMIA trial in over 300 sites in 33 countries worldwide. She also served as study chair for the first phase 2 and phase 3 trials conducted to test a pharmacologic agent for cardiogenic shock (SHOCK 2 and TRIUMPH). Additionally, she has been on numerous data safety monitoring boards and steering committees of international clinical trials. She recently won a four-year grant with her team from the American Heart Association (AHA) to investigate the causes of heart attack in women and research new techniques to manage stress after heart events.

Dr. Hochman currently serves on the NHLBI Board of External Experts and on the AHA Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee, and recently on the ACC/AHA Task Force on Practice Guidelines, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration/Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee, and the AHA National Research Program Subcommittee. She has authored almost 300 publications and chapters in major internal medicine and cardiovascular textbooks. In addition, she is a senior guest editor for Circulation, a section editor for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and serves on editorial boards of European Heart Journal and American Heart Journal.

Sripal Bangalore Presented with the Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Award

The Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Award recognizes young scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the field of cardiovascular disease and who have amassed an impressive body of scientific research in the basic or clinical domains. Dr. Bangalore was awarded the Young Scientist Award in honor of his contributions to cardiovascular research.

Dr. Bangalore is an interventional cardiologist, and an associate professor of medicine in the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology. He currently serves as Director of Research for the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, and Director of Cardiovascular Outcomes Group at NYU Langone's Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center.

Dr. Bangalore's main research interests are in large-scale clinical trials testing comparative effectiveness strategies for acute coronary syndromes, coronary artery disease and high blood pressure. He is currently leading the ISCHEMIA CKD trial, which is a NHLBI-funded multicenter clinical trial testing whether a routine invasive strategy reduces events in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). He has also received funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and serves on the steering committee of national clinical trials.

Dr. Bangalore has authored over 250 publications and chapters in major journals and cardiovascular textbooks, many of which have been cited by major national and international clinical practice guidelines. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including those from the AHA, Society of Coronary Angiography and Intervention, and the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT). He serves as a member of the Program Planning Committee for TCT Scientific Sessions, as well as associate director for the group. Dr. Bangalore is on the editorial boards of a number of journals and is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals including Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, The Lancet, the Annals of Internal Medicine, and others.

Eighteen Distinguished Awards will be presented at the Annual Scientific Session this year, each recognizing an individual who had made outstanding contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine. Recipients are nominated by their peers and then selected by the American College of Cardiology Awards Committee.
