NEW YORK, Nov. 28, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- World Animal Protection U.S. joins charities around the world by participating in #GivingTuesday, the powerful global giving movement. World Animal Protection is running a matching-gift fundraising challenge from November 28, 6 AM EST – November 29, 11:59 PM EST during which all donations made, up to a total of $25,000, will be matched by a group of generous donors. #GivingTuesday was launched in 2012 as a day for people and communities to give back following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In 2015, nonprofits raised more than $117 million online on #GivingTuesday to help make the world a better place in countless ways, with people also participating in #GivingTuesday activities in 71 countries around the globe last year. 2016 is World Animal Protection's third year participating in #GivingTuesday.
World Animal Protection works globally to protect animals in communities, in disasters, in farming, and in the wild. This #GivingTuesday, the organization is raising awareness of the suffering of bears farmed in Asia for their bile. Thousands of bears in Asia are kept in captivity in cages so their bile can be extracted for use in traditional medicine; the cruel methods used to extract bile inflict severe pain on bears, and their suffering is intense. It's also unnecessary – modern doctors agree that the use of bear bile is unjustified. Synthetic and herbal alternatives are more effective and readily available. World Animal Protection is determined to bring an end to the bear bile industry, to protect bears unable to defend themselves.
"#GivingTuesday is such a powerful movement for people to make an impact for the causes that matter to them," says Priscilla Ma, U.S. Executive Director of World Animal Protection. "At World Animal Protection, we urge people to remember the animals this #GivingTuesday. Together, we can make huge strides to change animals' lives for the better and protect animals, like bears farmed for their bile, who suffer terribly -- and needlessly."
