NEW YORK, May 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- GlassesUSA.com, a leading online retailer for prescription eyewear, polled nearly 1,000 individuals nationwide to find out whether we perceive celebrities who wear eyeglasses as having higher intelligence. The staggering results of the survey confirm the stereotype that people do indeed perceive glasses wearers as smarter. When asked to compare side by side imagery of celebrities with and without glasses, over 75 percent of respondents voted that the celebrities looked smarter with their specs vs. without.
"Studies have shown that people feel smarter and are perceived as being smarter when they wear glasses, and now we have even more evidence to support this fact," said Daniel Rothman, CEO of GlassesUSA.com. "As more and more people purchase glasses not just as a fashion accessory to mimic the styles of their favorite celebrities, but also to be regarded by others as more intelligent, our goal as an online glasses retailer is to make it easier for them to do so by providing major cost savings, convenience and risk-free purchasing."
The GlassesUSA.com survey, which asked participants to determine whether celebrities looked smarter with our without their glasses, garnered the following results: Justin Timberlake at 69% with and 31% without; Demi Lovato at 72% with and 28% without; Mayim Byalik at 67% with and 33% without; Steven Martin, who is well-known for his bespectacled look, at 85% with and 15% without; and Alicia Keys, who had the most significant difference, at 88% with and 12% without.
In addition to the GlassesUSA.com poll, several other recent studies, including one by the Journal of Social Psychology1, have shown that people who wear glasses are perceived as smarter, are more likely to get hired by employers, and are viewed as more competent and professional by coworkers. On top of leaving a more positive first impression about their intelligence, glasses wearers are even perceived by others as being more honest and hard-working.
